my thoughts

I can't believe that what I feel is really happening to me
Make it hurt
And point the finger at my insecurities
Well I guess I just don't understand about those complexities in your mind
And I guess I just don't understand why this world seems so unkind
Maybe just once I get what's coming to me.

**"Maybe Just Once" - Nine Inch Nails**

What is it about rumours that seems to get people going? The celebrity craze has hit an all-time high and it seems that all people can talk about is Beyoncé and Jay-Z or Ashton and Demi or Martha Stewart. Who the fuck cares about these people? Are they personal friends of yours to get so involved in their lives? Most likely, no, they're not. So why does everyone seem to care so much? And, if you say you don't care, then why does everyone seem to know what's going on in these strangers' lives? I'll admit that I do read People magazine and I do watch Extra on occasion. The only reasoning I can come up with is that it's interesting/entertaining. Other than that, why? This celebrity gossip obsession has also spread to everyday people, it seems. When we've had enough of random Britney marriages, we turn to our circles of friends for entertainment. Who's going to school where. Who's dating who. Who's not dating who. Who hates who. Who likes who. And we believe it all, even if it's through like a 50th person word-of-mouth. I'm sure that most of us played the game Broken Telephone when we were kids. You know, the game where you whisper a sentence through a line of kids and, by the time it gets to the last kid, it's completely different from the original sentence. Why can't we believe that about rumours and gossip? When someone starts a sentence with "did you hear about..." we are all ears. And it might even be shameless news that someone made up about something else. We hear it, believe it and pass it on, leaving the person who the gossip is about clueless as to how the rumour started. A lot of the time, the rumour is untrue and, by spreading it around, you are leaving an even bigger area for the person to do damage control over. I know it's next to impossible to tell everyone not to believe gossip, or not to pass it on. I have been guilty of that on many occasions. Maybe all I can say is that you should think on it before spreading the rumour on to others. Maybe ask the source where they got their information. Play detective a bit. Maybe use your head instead of your mouth. Maybe it's as simple as not believing everything you hear.
